A carjacker was killed by a handgun kept inside a trunk when he locked the cars owner inside.

Paul Brite (53) was confronted by a gunman Monday and forced into the trunk of his car, said Sgt. Jeff Maslan.

The kidnapper escaped. But, apparently fearing Brite had a cell phone, he stopped and opened the trunk.

Then victim came out with two handguns that he had stored in the trunk. He ordered the suspect several times to lie on the ground and he fired two warning shots. When the carjacker reached for his pocket, Brite shot him in the lower dead.

Mario Danele Sikes, who had been driving a station wagon behind the two tried to run over Brite, police said. Brite shot at the car and the driver fled, but was caught within minutes after a description of the car was broadcast via police radios.

Police said the carjacker "had an extensive record of carjacking in Florida and South Carolina" and was wanted in Palm Beach County on a robbery probation violation.

According to police there are no plans to charge Brite, but will they will turn over the case to the Broward State Attorney's Office for review. Sikes will be charged with theft, kidnapping and possibly felony murder for participating in a felony that resulted in the death of his cousin, Maslan said.
